This radio (and written) piece, produced by NPR and “This American Life,” is a clear explanation of what went down on Wednesday and Thursday, Sept. 18-19, to trigger that Friday’s announcement that the economy was collapsing and only hundreds of billions of federal money could save it.

By the way, next week’s “This American Life” episode will be devoted to the economic crisis.  You should definitely tune in, or listen online.
