Whoa.I’m actually more interested/ excited than concerned about this. Might be because I’m not American, but still. Select quotes:
Earlier, speaking on the House floor, Pelosi said “$700 billion [is a] a staggering number, but only a part of the cost of the failed Bush economic policies - policies that were built on budget recklessness … combined with an anything goes economic policy, [that] have taken us to where we are today.”Remember that on election day please.
Added Barney Frank, D-Mass.: “Today is the decision day. If we defeat this bill today, it will be a very bad day for the financial sector of the American economy and the people who will feel the pain are not the top bankers and top corporate executives but average Americans.”Indeed. But if it were passed they wouldn’t be so much better off as well, would they?
So; will be interesting to see how this will develop. I must admit I’m surprised by the rejection; when the war in Iraq costs the USA a multitude of this amount.
whoa… That is totally unexpected for me. Somehow it restores the faith in the american democracy for me. I was under the impression the USA was run by a an elite group, mainly bankers and other wealthy people. Did they overplay their hand? Are Dems and Reps stepping up, taking ownership of their country? This is so amazing…
Even stranger still is the idea that 2/3 of the Dems voted for, keeping their promises, but only 1/3 of the reps voted for, basically not doing what their leaders told them to do…
Dang…
